USA: Homes destroyed after deadly tornado batters Kentucky

The deadly tornadoes that tore through several US states causing at least 90 deaths, left a trail of destruction in Mayfield, Kentucky, as seen on Monday.

Houses were turned inside out, with metal structures scattered on the ground amid tree branches and debris. The nightmare landscape continued with vehicles turned upside down covered in wooden planks.

Local residents were seen rummaging through the remnants of their neighbourhood in search of their belongings and assessing the extent of the harm done.

A trailer providing water and food supplies was set up next to the town remains, offering support to the community.

Tornadoes ripped through six states in the Midwest and the South on Friday and Saturday, causing dozens of fatalities, and destroying at least 1,000 homes.

Kentucky governor Andy Beshear told a press conference that the powerful storms were ‘the most severe tornado event in Kentucky’s history,’ leaving more than 56,000 without power with at least 100 feared dead.

According to Beshear, Graves County, including the town of Mayfield, suffered the most destruction.
