Flames destroyed homes in northern California on Monday, as other wildfires intensified and battered states across the West Coast.

California’s Dixie fire, which began on July 14, has charred over 180,000 acres (73,200 hectares) in Plumas and Butte counties, prompting local authorities to issue evacuation orders.

Californian Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency because of wildfires, he described as creating “conditions of extreme peril to the safety of persons and property.”

Oregon’s Bootleg fire, now the largest US wildfire, continues to threaten thousands of homes as more than 2,200 crew members tacked it.

Fire officials in Washington and Idaho states have also been battling fires, prompting evacuations.

More than 1.4 million acres (553,000 hectares) have reportedly been burned in western states.
