The statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was taken down in Richmond, Virginia, on Wednesday, marking the removal of the last remaining Confederate statue from the city’s historic Monument Avenue.

Workers were carried by aerial lift to the towering statue, before using equipment to separate the monument from its base for its removal by crane, as crowds watched on.

The week prior, a pair of rulings from the state Supreme Court allowed the removal of the twelve-tonne statue after intense national debate, with the tree-lined Monument Avenue marking what was once the capital of the Confederacy.

The statue is the latest in a series of Confederate symbols to have been taken down in over the past year, after the 2020 murder of George Floyd prompted national outcry over police brutality and racism.
