Across the world, statues are under attack.

Over the past two weeks, monuments to an uncomfortable past have been defaced, beheaded and pulled down.

But does this new wave of activism represent an iconic moment in history, or simply the erasing of it?

From British explorers and imperialists to Confederate generals and politicians, the Black Lives Matter movement has set its sights on sweeping away the physical legacy of slavery and colonialism.

Statues of Christopher Columbus, Juan de Onate, Edward Colston, Cecil Rhodes, Robert E Lee and Winston Churchill have all been targeted by activists.

The floodgates have opened on a debate that has been simmering for decades: should these statues stand or fall?
