The leader of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi killed himself and his family during a US military raid in Syria, US Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirkby said from Washington DC on Thursday.

Al-Quraishi had led the group since the 2019 death of its founder Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was also killed during a separate US raid.

Kirkby said Quraishi blew himself up in northwest Syria overnight, also killing members of his own family including women and children. According to the spokesperson, US President Joe Biden personally called for a raid to be carried out instead of an airstrike.

Kirkby also used the opportunity to claim that Russia was potentially planning “a false flag” attack in Ukraine that could target members of Ukraine’s Russian speaking population.
