Beaches in Los Angeles, California, remained closed on Saturday after an estimated 8.5 million gallons (38.6 million litres) of sewage leaked into the surrounding ocean, as seen in Cabrillo Beach, San Pedro.
The area around the beach appeared quiet with signs notifying the public of the closure.
One person could however be seen surfing in the waves, whilst several others dipped their toes in the water.
San Pedro resident Christina labelled the spill as ‘disgusting,’ stating that an annual New Year’s Day swim was cancelled due to the news.
“What I am noticing today however is there is a strong smell that’s coming from the water so I am trying to clean up the beach but I am trying to stay away from the water at the same time because I know it’s toxic, I know it’s polluted because of this spill of raw sewage,” said resident Kathy Creighton, adding, “it’s horrible.”
On Thursday, millions of gallons of sewage leaked into the Dominguez Channel, a perennial river that leads into Los Angeles Harbour, due to a broken pipeline in the city of Carson.
Authorities announced the immediate closure of all beaches affected by the spill on Friday.
The accident marks the second Southern California sewage spill in six months, with several beaches closing in July after 17 million gallons of sewage (77.3 million litres) flowed into Santa Monica Bay.
