Scientists involved in the DART planetary defence test mission scheduled for late November outlined details of the project at a media briefing in Laurel on Thursday.
The Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft will be flown to a small asteroid Dimorphos, which orbits another asteroid called Didymos. DART will then be crashed into Dimorphos with the intention of slightly changing its orbit. The test aims to prove that an asteroid can be kinetically impacted by an autonomously navigated spacecraft.
DART mission systems engineer Elena Adams described the planned approach to the target. “When we approach it, it has to be at such an angle that it gets lit by the sun because we won’t see if it’s there, the asteroid’s really dark, we won’t be able to see it and won’t be able to hit using smart navigation,” she said.
The spacecraft assigned to the DART test has been filled with fuel, and undertaken many of its final tests ahead of the scheduled launch on November 23 according to a NASA statement.
