Navy engineer Jonathan Toebbe and his wife, Diana, appeared in a West Virginia US District Court in Martinsburg, on Tuesday, after being arrested on federal espionage charges on Saturday.

Vans thought to be transporting Toebbe and his wife were seen arriving at the courthouse.

The couple appeared separately in the courtroom, where they were assigned public defenders.

Toebbe, who had an active Q-level security clearance, allegedly agreed to sell secret information on nuclear submarines for a combined $100,000 (€87,000) to an undercover FBI agent positing as a foreign government representative.
