USA: ‘No cause for alarm’ – NY Gov on five confirmed Omicron cases

New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that five cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 had been confirmed in the state during a presser in New York City on Thursday but insisted that the situation was still ‘no cause for alarm.’

“We just want to make sure that the public is aware of the information when we receive it. We don’t have more information at this time, but we suspect there’ll be more cases emerging. And the best thing that everyone can do is realise we’re not defenceless against this variant at all. That vaccine, we know, is going to ensure that there are less severe symptoms,” added the governor.

Four cases were found in New York City and one in Suffolk County as cases continue to spike in the area. The first person to be identified with a newly discovered variant of COVID-19 had attended a conference at the Javits Conference Centre in Manhattan.

“We announced this morning that a case from Minnesota was directly tied to the city of New York for individuals who participated in a convention at the Javits Centre between November 18 and the 22nd. That individual has already recovered from their symptoms. They tested positive but are already feeling well, and it was a minor case.”

Governor Hochul, along with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, emphasised that the best response to fight the new variant was to get vaccinated, and for those already vaccinated, to receive a booster shot. They also advised wearing face masks in closed spaces and avoiding large social gatherings.
