The parents of a baby rescued by US marines at Kabul airport, following the Taliban takeover of the country in August, detailed the harrowing story behind their escape in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday.

Baby Liya, who was just 16 days old at the time of her rescue, featured in a viral video being hauled over a wire fence at Kabul airport by a US marine, a video which quickly became a symbol of Afghans struggling to flee the country.

Liya’s father, linguist and cultural advisor Hameed, detailed how he had told his wife to go with their child to Kabul airport following the Taliban’s Kabul takeover, stating that she was ‘robbed of everything she had’ along the way.

Hameed continued that after his wife collapsed ‘from heat and exhaustion’, he had convinced the US marines to pass his daughter over the barbed wires, and ultimately to safety.

“They were the marines and I worked with them, I knew them. Handing my baby over to the marines, I was pretty sure I would get her back,” said Hameed.

The family have now relocated to Phoenix, Arizona.
