USA: "Probably for the best" - New Yorkers on new FB services outages

New Yorkers were interviewed about the recent outages that hit the Facebook services with people reacting mostly positively to the event in the streets of the Big Apple on Friday.

“It felt really liberating. I wish Facebook could disappear forever. I was disappointed when it came back,” said Vanessa, a resident.

Another resident, Charles, echoed her sentiment: “I don’t care. I personally think that social media is one of the worst things to happen in our society, so, honestly, it’s probably for the best.” Some, though, voiced concern, saying that they used social media to communicate with relatives and also adding that not being able to scroll through Instagram made them feel uncomfortable as people had to stay alone with their own thoughts.

The Facebook services were hit with new outages on Friday, following Monday ones with Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram going down in many parts of the world for hours, disrupting communication flows worldwide for billions of users following ‘configuration changes on the backbone routers.’

Communications were later restored amid Facebook’s longest outage since 2008.

The disruption is estimated to have cost the company over $60 millions (€51,8 million) in advertising revenue.
