New Orleans residents shared their thoughts on Monday regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which blew through the city on Sunday, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Debris and fallen branches could be seen strewn across roads and pavements, leading to road closures, with one tree having fallen on top of a car due to the high winds.
“The wind damage is pretty bad, power outages, I don’t know about anything else, I don’t know how many people got hurt, died, or anything like that,” said one local resident.
The storm was classed as a Category Four hurricane when it made landfall. By Sunday evening, nearly all of New Orleans was without power. Huge amounts of rain are expected to follow as Ida continues north.
Ida hit New Orleans on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, with the storm sparking fears for Louisiana’s hospitals, as they are already packed with over 2,500 coronavirus patients currently.
SOT, Local resident: “It has no power. Yeah, I don’t know what’s going on anywhere outside of here, I just walked down here, I see trees down and that’s it.”
SOT, Local resident: “Lots of trees and limbs fell down and windows busted out. I saw one lady, she was pretty old, trying to drag a tarp or something, I asked her if I could help, she said she was fine. I don’t want to scare anybody, you know, sometimes people might be threatened if I walk up and they don’t know who I am.”
