USA: Hurricane Ida batters Louisiana with strong winds

New Orleans streets were battered by strong winds and heavy rain, as Hurricane Ida hit the city on Sunday.
The storm rolled in soaking the streets in a torrential downpour with winds of up to 240kph (150mph) uprooting trees from bricks on the pavement.
The hurricane is expected to travel north, according to the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center, curving towards the east as it travels through Mississippi on Monday, with thousands having already fled to safety.
Beginning as a tropical storm, Hurricane Ida was upgraded to a Category 4 storm on Friday with winds reaching 120 kph (74 mph).
