US intelligence reports say Russia is ‘working actively’ on a ‘false flag’ operation to justify invading Ukraine, said a Pentagon spokesperson during a press conference at the Pentagon in Arlington, on Friday.

“We do have information that indicates that Russia is already working actively to create a pretext for a potential invasion, for a move on Ukraine,” said Pentagon Press Secretary John Kirby. “We already have information that they’ve prepositioned a group of operatives to conduct what we call a ‘false flag’ operation, an operation designed to look like an attack on them or their people, Russian-speaking people in Ukraine again as an excuse to go in.”

The Kremlin, reacting to earlier reports of a planned ‘false flag’ action by Russia, rejected the accusations as baseless and unfounded.

Kirby’s press conference came amid reports of cyber attacks on Ukrainian government websites following talks between Washington DC and Moscow to de-escalate the tensions at the Ukrainian border. However, Ukraine officials have said it was too early to say who was responsible for the hack, with an investigation having been launched.
