USA: State Dept. spox says NATO leaves "open door for meaningful dialogue" with Russia

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price commented on relations with Russia following its decision to suspend its permanent mission to NATO, during a press briefing in Washington DC on Monday. The suspension follows NATO’s recent withdrawal of accreditation of eight members of the Russian mission.
“NATO recently withdrew the accreditation of eight members of the Russian mission to NATO, who had reportedly been serving as undeclared Russian intelligence officers. NATO’s policy towards Russia remains consistent. It has strengthened its deterrence and its defence in response to Russia’s aggressive action while at the same time leaving the door open for meaningful dialogue,” said Price.
This month, NATO expulsed eight members of Russians mission to the military alliance, claiming that they were undeclared intelligence officers. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday that Russia would suspend its mission to NATO in November.
Price also commented on the sixth round of talks between the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva on the country’s constitution, “We stand firmly behind UN Security Council resolutions 2254 and UN Security special envoy Pedersen, who brought the co-chairs together in advance of the constitutional committee for the first time yesterday.”
The spokesperson also took a moment to honour US former secretary of state and soldier Colin Powell, who died on Monday due to complications from COVID-19.

Americans across this country are lucky enough to have experienced a trailblazing leader with integrity, with character. Perhaps most of all with decency. And this institution and this country are better off because of Colin Powell, whom we all miss very dearly.”

We stand firmly behind UN Security Council resolutions 2254 and UN Security special envoy Pedersen, who brought the co-chairs together in advance of the constitutional committee for the first time yesterday. It is essential that the Syrian regime and the leaders of the opposition engage constructively in Geneva, consistent with the political process outlined in UN Security Council resolution 2254.”

We have been consistent in terms of where we stand with the Venezuelan-led negotiations between the unity platform and Maduro regime. We support them. We continue to support them and we continue to believe that they should lead to peaceful restoration of democracy, that the people of Venezuela so earnestly desire and deserve.”

SOT, Journalist: “Will the US participate in the Moscow talks (about Afghanistan) or won’t?” Ned Price, US State Department spokesperson: “We will not participate in the Moscow talks. The Troika-plus has been an effective, a constructive forum. We look forward to engaging in that forum going forward but we are not in a position to take part this week.”
