Two hyenas at the Denver Zoo in Colorado, have contracted COVID-19. They were seen in their enclosure on Monday.

Brian Aucone, senior vice president for life sciences at the Denver Zoo, said this is the first documented case anywhere in the world of hyenas becoming infected with the widespread disease. The animal handlers noticed some lethargy and sneezes with the hyenas, conducted a nasal swab test, and the results were positive.

The hyenas’ symptoms have been mild, and the two animals are being treated by the keepers, and are expected to recover. Aucone said that while the cases are noteworthy from a scientific standpoint, visitors to the zoo are not at risk from the hyenas, nor from the handful of other animals at the zoo which have contracted COVID.

Aucone said hyenas have incredibly strong immune systems, and are actually studied by scientists to learn about immunity and healing, with the hope the findings might benefit people as well.
