US President Joe Biden announced Qatar would be designated as a major non-NATO ally during a meeting with Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Washington DC on Monday, a decision that will officially upgrade the two countries’ partnership.
In his statement from the Oval Office, Biden called Qatar a ‘good friend and reliable partner,’ adding that he would notify the US Congress of his decision to ‘designate Qatar as a major non-NATO ally’ to signify the importance of the countries’ relationship.
The new status means Doha would receive special economic and military privileges from Washington.
The US leader also addressed current tensions between Ukraine and Russia, saying that he had had a productive talk with President Zelenskyy and would continue to engage in ‘non-stop diplomacy and to de-escalate tensions.’
“With Russia continuing its buildup of its forces around Ukraine, we are ready no matter what happens,” said Biden.
