Venezuela: President Maduro meets international election observers ahead of the regional elections

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro received received members of several international observation missions at the Miraflores Palace in Caracas, on Saturday, ahead of Sunday’s regional elections.

In a speech during the meeting, Maduro pointed to nations critical of his government, saying “the United States and the European elites are trying to create a new classification: the authoritarian bad guys and the good guys, led by Biden, the democrats. To the bad guys, attacks, attacks, attacks. They deny them water, they deny them everything. To the good guys they put up with everything, like Ivan Duque, the massacres, the assassinations, the drug trafficking.”

Sunday’s elections will be the first in which the opposition has participated in four years. Opposition parties questioned the legitimacy of the last elections and accused President Nicolas Maduro of rigging the elections and intimidating voters.

In total, Venezuelans will elect 23 governors and 335 mayors in the elections.
