Kilometres of a traffic jam were filmed at Pakistan’s Torkham International Border Crossing with Afghanistan, Saturday.

Vehicles, mostly trucks with goods were seen standing still with drivers forced to sleep under them on carpets, as, according to some of them, people had been stranded at the border for almost a month.

“We have been stuck at the border for 25 days, the Taliban are also standing there (on another side of the border), the situation is very difficult. Vegetables are also coming, grapes are also loaded. It is a very painful situation here,” said one of the drivers.

After the Taliban takeover, the waiting time at the border has increased due to previous disruptions that also caused a halt in trade between the two countries.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Himayat Ullah, Driver (Urdu): “Here the vehicle has been parked for 25 days to one month, the installment of the vehicle is about one lakh (600$) How can we pay? There is a lot of damage to everything. Vegetables and fruit have been loaded for a month, how it’s safe?”

SOT, Zahir Zaie, Driver (Urdu): “We have been stuck at the border for 25 days, the Taliban are also standing there on other side of the boarder), the situation is very difficult. Vegetables are also coming, grapes are also loaded. It is a very painful situation here.”
