‘Why are DEADLY Peru Protests Continuing?’

Deadly protests sweeping across Peru show no signs of slowing, as thousands call for Peru’s president Dina Boluarte to stand down.

Lawmakers partially met the demonstrators’ demands, by bring forward the 2026 elections, to 2024. But for the protesters, that’s not enough.

Even the president herself has asked that the election date is brought forward again - to this year.

But, congress rejected the proposal on Saturday, with 45 votes in favour, 65 against and two abstentions.

The country has been embroiled in a political crisis with near-daily protests since the 7th of December 2022, when the former president Pedro Castillo was arrested after attempting to dissolve congress, and rule by decree. His vice president, Boluarte, immediately took over and has faced strong opposition ever since.

But what started as outrage and grief surrounding Castillo’s arrest has morphed into protests that reflect the lack of political representation many Peruvians, especially those outside the capital of Lima, have felt for decades.

The political crisis has been exacerbated in recent years - by the economic impact of the pandemic and access to services like health care and education.

The current president is the sixth head of state in less than five years.

At the heart of the crisis is Peru’s broken political system. Both the presidency and congress are widely perceived as corrupted institutions. Even if the current president stepped down as the protesters demand, there is no firm solution to the crisis.
