There are over 200 species of poison dart frog. There are two species of poison dart frogs at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Green and black dart frogs and Dyeing Dart frogs. Most poison dart frogs are very small (under an inch) but these are much larger species. The Dyeing dart frog can grow to around 2 inches in length! Dart frogs are active during the day unlike most frog species. They can do this because they can be toxic if ingested. So dart frogs use their bright colors to warn potential predators to stay away. Not all Poison Dart Frogs are deadly however. Many just taste bad, while others such as the Golden Dart Frog has enough poison in it’s body to kill 12 or more adult humans! In the wild, Dart frogs eat things like ants and beetles that contain chemicals that the dart frog then can turn into poison for protection. At the Cincinnati Zoo they are fed fruit flies and small crickets so they are actually not dangerous at all. Because dart frogs breath through their skin, their skin is very permeable-meaning things can pass into their bodies quite easily. This is why frogs are oftentimes referred to as “bio-indicators” meaning that they are some of the first animals affected when pollution or any contaminants are present in the environment. This is one of many reasons that frogs are so important to have around. Happy World Frog Day!
