A 1,000 kg World War II bomb was detonated on Saturday evening in Exeter, England, after being discovered the day before.

Around 2,600 properties and 1,400 students from a nearby campus had to be evacuated.

Police said the controlled explosion left a crater “around the size of a double decker bus,” and some buildings and areas on the campus have still to be assessed as safe for occupation.

The city was heavily attacked by German bombers in 19 raids during World War II, when more than 7,000 devices were dropped, particularly during the Baedecker Raids.
