Bicycling on Flooded Roads: Tropical Rain in Kuala Lumpur

After 30-45 minutes of heavy tropical rain, I bicycle through Kuala Lumpur and get to experience the flooded roads first hand. First, I get splashed big time by a car (1:23). And later, I almost come to a halt while cycling through 1 foot deep water flowing against me (12:50). Truly an adventurous ride! The ride takes place 6:30 pm on a Saturday evening, as I'm making my way to Bangsar for a dinner party at 7 pm. My change of clothes is in the bicycle basket, which I 'weather-proofed' with a normal plastic bag creeping over the edges. Smart and simple. And cheap(!), since I recall seeing a commercial Brompton basket rain cover that was quite expensive. In the movie, I mention that the city does not get so easily flooded anymore after the SMART tunnel was built. SMART is an acronym for Storm Management And Road Tunnel was built to divert storm rain water from the city center out of the city in a nearly 10 km long tunnel, which for part of the way doubles up as a 4 km long 2-way road tunnel to 'drain' traffic in and out of the city. Of course, the SMART tunnel is closed to traffic during heavy rains, but most of the time it helps to easy the traffic jams. The video is filmed with a GoPro Hero4 camera mounted in a chest-strap with an open back cover to give better audio. I was a bit worried that rain would enter from the back and spoil the camera, but nothing happened. Phew!
