Farmer Vermeulen rules like a king over his domain, his wife and children. He is a grumpy, biblical character wh does not tolerate any interference. The only one who dares to resist him is his son Louis, a young vivacious fellow who faces life unconcernedly. The tension between the two becomes more and more apparent when the question arises as to where the flax should be sown. When Louis falls in love with the newly employed milkmaid, Schellebelle, the old man becomes furious and decides to buy a farm for his son and to give him in marriage to a farmer's daughter of a higher class. When farmer Vermeulen leaves to purchase the farm, Louis resolves, in spite of his father's prohibition, to harvest the flax on the disputed field. At his return the old farmer finds a wild group of flax harvesters dancing with rebellious Louis and his beloved Schellebelle in their midst upon which he knocks his son down to the ground with his knotty club, symbol of his authority.
