India: Survivors of horrific acid attacks open cafe

W/S Taj Mahal SCRIPT Several heavily scarred women could be seen busy at work in a local cafe opposite the Taj Mahal, Wednesday, as part of a brand new project to protect and support the victims of acid attacks. Opened on October 19, 'Sheroes Hangout' is an initiative started by the Stop Acid Attacks campaign that aims to foster independence and self-sustainability of women scarred by the horrific attacks. The cafe is run by Chanchal, Ritu, Rupa and Geeta, several acid attacks survivors. While the cafe functions as a regular business, founding member Alok Dixit stated that the 'Sheroes Hangout' was designed to spread awareness of acid attacks, and remove the stigma surrounding its victims. The space also provides activist workshops, a feminist library, and functions as a community radio hub.
