July 25, 2012 Russia_Moscow-based Tajiks rally against military operation in homeland

Citizens of Tajikistan held a rally outside their country's embassy in Moscow on Tuesday, calling for an end to a military operation in their homeland that has claimed the lives of at least 42 people. A military operation in the eastern mountainous Pamir region of the county earlier in the day resulted in the deaths of 12 soldiers and 30 rebels. Around 40 rebels have been captured. The protesters also demanded that the government provide help in establishing contact with their relatives in the conflict zone. The fighting erupted in and around the eastern city of Khorog, close to Tajikistan's border with Afghanistan. Communications with the town have been cut off.
