A brief video in which a performer demonstrates a lali (拉篥), a traditional reed instrument of the Yao ethnic group (瑶族) of southern China.
The performer is Liang Zhirong (梁治荣), the director of the Da Longtan Traditional Musical Instrument Hall (大龙潭民族乐器馆), who has been studying the inheritance and innovation of traditional musical instruments for many years. He modified the traditional lali, which has just four finger holes, into a 9-hole instrument, and, adding a fat gourd at the bottom of the instrument for increased resonance, the sound quality is more round and thick.
Later in the video Liang plays a 2-stringed fiddle called niutuiqin (牛腿琴).
Probably filmed at the Da Longtan Traditional Musical Instrument Hall (which opened in 2017), Longtan Park (龙潭公园), Liuzhou (柳州市), north-central Guangxi, southern China, c. March 29, 2017.
As of 2010, the Yao ethnic group made up 1.91% of the population of Liuzhou.
