Purchasing a young and unbroken horse is not recommended for the amateur, this 14-month-old filly is still strong enough to kill a man as big and strong as Arnold Schwarzenegger. After arrival at your place the first couple of days will be taken up with you simply gaining the trust of your animal. Unlike dogs and cats that are predatory in nature, horses are prey animals and have a strong flight response. Unlike the movies when the Cowboys camped out at night their horses functions just like watch dogs, tying the horses on the edges of the camp you would be sure to be warned of any approaching danger.
Please consider purchasing this book and reading it before even considering a horse as one of your preps. ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1603424717/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=1603424717&linkCode=as2&tag=dsarti1-20 )
Anyway in this video I am demonstrating how to desensitize the horse to weapon fire. You want to start out with a fairly quiet rifle like a Ruger 1022. After the horse smells the rifle and is comfortable with you holding it then pointed away and fire one shot into the ground then placed the rifle on safe and let the horse smell the rifle and even use a rifle as a brush to brush the horse so the animal learns that the rifle is not going to hurt it. After the horses calm down, repeat the process until you can fire the rifle through a full magazine without the horse even going on alert. Do this every day for a week then try it with a larger caliber and start the process all over again. Never fire from horseback with a muzzle brake on your rifle because this sends the muzzle blast from the rifle downward toward your horse and would definitely cause hearing damage. If you plan on firing a rifle from a horse this would be an excellent time to use a silencer.
I also explained in this video a few other simple things about horses that some people may not know. As you can see this horse will be the subject of many more videos yet to come because Cleopatra will not even be ready to be written for at least another 10 months.
