The Best Neck Stretch for the Scalene Muscles

The Scalenes are muscles behind your Sternoclediomastoid muscle at your neck. The function of the Scalene muscles are to laterally side bend your neck and also lift up your first two ribs to assist in breathing when necessary. When the Scalene muscles are tight, several problems can occur. For one, when one is stressed, they are not going to breathe from their belly as much, but their chest. The Scalene muscles will then turn on to help lift up the first two ribs to get more air into the lungs. If one is constantly stressed out, then these muscles can become tight. Another way the Scalene muscles can become stiff is if one is constantly in forward head posture. We are in forward head posture a lot already in this day and age due to our head being forward to look at our computer screen. When the neck is forward, however, our Scalene muscles can become tight and pull us into even more forward head posture, which can down the road lead to headaches, degeneration of the spine and many other problems. A nerve bundle called the Brachial Plexus also runs between the two front most Scalene muscles. When those two front muscles become tight, the Brachial Plexus can become impinged upon, which can send a tingling, electric pain down your arm on the affected side. To prevent the above issues from occurring, it is important to do a neck stretch your anterior, posterior and Middle Scalenes. With your Scalene muscles loosened and you correcting your posture, as well as reducing your stress, you should minimize any problems that would otherwise be more likely to occur.
