Afghan security forces and local militants defended their front line around Taloqan, the capital of the Takhar province on Saturday, amid ongoing clashes with Taliban fighters across the region.

“The Taliban group last night began aggressive attacks from three parts, from Haskapa Bazaar, and Pul-e-Marshal Fahim, and Pul-e- Safia areas. Fortunately their attacks were void after a cooperative operation by security and defensive forces and by help of militiamen and during the clashes 17 members of the opposite group were killed and wounded including two of their foremen, and their offensive has been pushed back,” confirmed Khalil Asir, spokesperson for the Takhar Police Commander.

Militants were adamant that they will continue fighting for as long as it takes to ward off the Taliban.

“If we do not protect our country, who will protect it,” said Atiqullah.

Severe conflicts have been ongoing for weeks around the province, located in the north east of Afghanistan, close to the border with Tajikistan.

The Taliban have reportedly seized control of several Afghan border crossings in recent weeks. The group has made rapid advances in the face of the withdrawal of US and other NATO troops.

The Biden administration has announced that all US military forces will have left the country by August 31, ending an almost 20-year deployment.

SOT, Mujahid Brut, Militant commander (Dari): “I already dug a grave for myself and will be buried but I will not leave the front line, I won’t leave my post.”

SOT, Atiqullah, Militant (Dari): “The enemy have lost their morals. They have been beaten, but god willing they cannot fight us, we will be fighting them from post to post.”

SOT, Atiqullah, Militant (Dari): “As I said before, God willing I am standing by as trigger weapon. We are Afghan youth, if we do not protect our country, who will protect it.”

SOT, Najibullah, Takhar resident (Dari): “They attack from four parts of the city to capture this place or to break the front line but they couldn’t. Security forces with a lot of struggle pushed them back from the region.”
