Afghanistan: Girls return to school in Mazar-i-Sharif as attendance drops following Taliban takeover

A school in Mazar-i-Sharif City were seen less busy than usual on Monday, as many female students remained at home due to fears prompted by the recent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

“I am coming to my job at school, but the number of the students is few, they have disappeared. I request that the parents send their children to school to continue their education because we are ready here,” a female teacher at the Fatima Balkhi High School said.

Although teachers were present in the school, many desks remained empty, with the schoolyard and corridors similarly bare.

“I demand that there must be no restrictions for women, that women can continue their education for free, and they can continue their university, and also, they must join university and colleges so that they can serve in society,” said pupil Asilla, who had shown up to attend her class.

The Taliban are consolidating their power in Afghanistan following an offensive that led to the takeover of Kabul and the fall of the Ashraf Ghani-led Afghan government.

The offensive followed an announcement in April that the US and other NATO states would be withdrawing their forces from the country.

Prior to the Taliban’s seizure of power, China, India, Pakistan, Russia and the US, among other world powers, had been pushing for an end to the conflict in Afghanistan.

Human rights organisations have expressed initial concern about the future of women’s rights in Afghanistan as new laws are implemented, however, Taliban leaders claim these rights will be recognised within the framework of Islamic laws.
