Thousands of Kandahar residents have been left internally displaced with some camping on the outskirts of Kandahar city on Sunday as Taliban forces intensify their offensive against Afghan government forces

“Besides the clashes in some districts of Kandahar for the past three weeks, there were clashes in several other districts which are ongoing right now an unfortunately our civilian countrymen have been displaced, with the figure rising to 24,0000 families,” said Kandahar Refugee and Repatriation Affairs Department director Doost Mohammad Nayab.

“An average of between 250 and 500 families are being displaced from the secure parts of the city,” added Nayab.

In a recent development, Taliban forces have targeted Kandahar airport on Saturday night in an attempt to disrupt the airstrike capabilities of the Afghan government.

Five civilian casualties have also been reported in the Kandahar province on Sunday following a Taliban mortar strike on a civilian vehicle.

As part of the ongoing conflict, some displaced people in other parts of the country are also seeking entry into neighbouring countries including Pakistan, Tajikistan, China, and Iran in an attempt to flee the conflict.

Following 20 years of military intervention, the impending withdrawal of US and NATO forces has been met by a renewed offensive by the Taliban, who have captured several key border crossings and swathes of the country. The Biden administration has confirmed that all US military forces will have left the country by August 31.
