Afghanistan: Planes and helicopters fly over Kabul with shots heard amid evacuation efforts

Planes and helicopters were seen flying over Kabul on Sunday, as the US and allies raced to evacuate foreign diplomats following the Taliban’s advancement to the city.

The US officials have stated that diplomats were being transported to Kabul airport from the embassy, whilst American troops arrived to help with the evacuation process.
Earlier on Sunday, the Taliban forces successfully captured the city of Jalalabad, as well as the Torkham border post with Pakistan.

The Taliban announced that they had taken control of the presidential palace in Kabul as President Ashraf Ghani fled the country as the militants entered the capital.
The Taliban offensive follows the US and other NATO forces’ ongoing withdrawal.
