Afghan government forces clashed with Taliban fighters in a pass just north of Kandahar city on Wednesday.

Gunshots could be heard ringing out as government forces manned positions on the road with humvees.

One resident fleeing the fighting shared his frustration at the long-running conflict.

“I left my home here until it gets more secure or if peace comes. May there be an end to the conflicts, we are tired of war. It has been around 50 years we have suffered from war,” said Gul Ahmad.

Another man was seen driving a van loaded with belongings.

“I left my home, I am going to Khakriz. Here there is always war I am leaving because of war otherwise there is no problem. I am leaving just cause of clashes,” explained the driver.

The Taliban has made sweeping advances across Afghanistan as the militant group has stepped up its offensive against the government, after the US and its NATO allies announced they would withdraw their forces.

The Biden administration has confirmed that all US military forces will have left the country by August 31.
