Dozens of Afghan militiamen and members of the Afghan security forces were deployed around Taleqan, the capital of Takhar province, on Tuesday, one day after the Taliban reportedly failed to take the city.

Border police commander Abdul Latif Omari said that “all the people of Takhar province must be assured that the Afghan security and defence forces are now busy with combat tasks in Takhar.”

Armed with rifles, militia members chanted “we defend our country” as they gathered behind trees.

According to local media, the insurgents already control much of the rest of the province, and have been attacking Taleqan for the past month. Monday’s attack was rebuffed with the aid of air power, with 28 militants being killed, according to Afghan officials.

The Taliban has made sweeping advances across the country, seizing control of key border crossings, as US and NATO troops withdraw.

The Biden administration has confirmed that all US military forces will have left the country by August 31.
