SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “What we identified came up many times during the conversation but was again repeated at the end. The need to continue fighting against COVID-19. It’s not an immediate priority, but, if we don’t do anything, the situation will worsen. After that, we moved on to the urgent point of organising assistance to migrants. Moving from the humanitarian aspect to the human rights aspect, we also talked about the problems regarding women’s rights and the necessity of given them access to the correct institutions and not go 20 years back in time. This is an observation that seemed to me that was agreed on by all members of the G20.”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “We don’t want Afghanistan to return to the state of being some sort of hub for international terrorism. Regarding this, there was a big effort from all leaders. For many countries, this also means to coordinate actions against terrorism.”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “Another point, more operational, was regarding the Kabul airport. If the Kabul airport doesn’t remain open, it becomes much more difficult to organise international assistance.”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “More than 600,000 people have been displaced and more than a million migrants are lost right now. We’re trying to give a bit of order and visibility to this migrant situation, or it would otherwise have no coordination.”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “Towards the end, I invited everyone to work as hard as possible together, most importantly regarding the humanitarian crisis, because at least this would permit us to overcome the inevitable geopolitical points of view. Regarding this, everybody was in agreement.”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “The situation is bigger than the humanitarian problem though. Because, to be sure that all this works, it’s important that the economy doesn’t completely collapse. Because this would mean putting even more resources to helping the economical and banking system, well, I say banking system, I mean a few banks.”
SOT, Journalist (Italian): “I wanted to ask if Putin’s absence today had anything to do with the lack of invites for Iran and Pakistan, whose presence was requested by minister Lavrov last time he was in Rome. And also, I want to ask if it’s worth organising this event today without the important presence of China and Russia?”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “As I said before, it’s absolutely worth it. It’s the first multi-lateral response to the Afghanistan crisis. Therefore, it’s very important. We had the confirmation that the United Nations will be the great director of this answer. Regarding Putin’s absence, there is no connection, at least as far as I know, with the fact that we couldn’t invite another two countries. Iran I don’t think was ever requested, I don’t really remember. In any case I don’t think there is any connection. We had a chat not long ago, a few weeks ago. The conversation was long, cordial, so no. The same goes for President Xi.”

SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “We are aware that the efforts regarding climate are not realistic without participation from China, Russia, and even India.”
SOT, Mario Draghi, Italian Prime Minister (Italian): “The question regards both us and the magistrates, who are continuing their investigation, and formalising their conclusions. Right now we are reflecting on it (whether far-right party Forza Nuova should be dissolved).”
