Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu called for ‘solidarity’ between states dealing with the ‘burden’ of waves of Afghan migrants, during an emergency meeting of the Co-operation Council of Turkic Speaking Countries to discuss Afghanistan in Istanbul on Monday.
“Developments in Afghanistan have global implications, but developments in Afghanistan are of greater interest to the Turkish Council as a country in the same region,” said Cavusoglu, stressing that the two states are linked ‘historically and culturally.’
Cavusoglu went on to state that the prevention of humanitarian crisis, human rights violations, irregular migration waves, and terrorism, were the country’s main concerns regarding Afghanistan.
SOT, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister (Turkish): “Today, as the foreign ministers of our family council, the Turkish Council, we discussed the developments in Afghanistan. Developments in Afghanistan have global implications, but developments in Afghanistan are of greater interest to the Turkish Council as a country in the same region. We all have a common denominator with the Afghan people, historically and culturally. Millions of Turkish noble Afghans also live in Afghanistan. That is why we, as foreign ministers of the Turkish Council, met in Istanbul today to discuss Afghanistan.”
SOT, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkish Foreign Minister (Turkish): “Like the entire intercontinental community, the Turkish Council’s expectations and concerns about Afghanistan are similar. Prevention of humanitarian crisis and economic collapse, prevention of human rights violations, including minority and women’s rights, prevention of an irregular wave of migration, prevention of the re-empowerment of terrorism. For this, it is important to establish an inclusive government in the country and to work with the state mechanism. With this understanding, we discussed the steps that can be taken as the Turkish Council to help the Afghan people in the face of the humanitarian crisis. We called for solidarity between countries that bear the burden of irregular migration, especially neighboring countries. We discussed what can be done in the fight against terrorism. A joint statement emphasising these animosities was also adopted.”
