Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi commented on the recent Taliban advancement in Afghanistan, saying that ‘the future of Afghanistan will be decided by Afghan people’, during a press conference in Multan on Sunday.

Qureshi pledged that Pakistan would recognise the Afghan government ‘in line with international consensus’, as well as ‘Pakistan’s national interests’.

“Pakistan has no favourites in Afghanistan, the future of Afghanistan will be decided by Afghan people whether the are Taliban or Afghan government,” Qureshi continued.

The Foreign Minister’s comments came as earlier that day, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani fled his country for Tajikistan, following the Taliban’s arrival at the outskirts of Kabul.

The Taliban offensive follows the US and other NATO forces’ withdrawal from the country.
