Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid announced a new interim government in Afghanistan, with acting Prime Minister Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhand and new cabinet picks during a press conference in Kabul.

Among the nominated were established Taliban personalities who dominated the 20-year battle against the United States and its allies.

The Taliban declared the country an ‘Islamic Emirate.’

The announcement came hours after the Taliban fired gunshots to disperse protesters outside the Pakistani embassy, accusing the neighbouring country of interfering in internal Afghan affairs and playing an active role in the Taliban takeover.

The Taliban is designated a terrorist organisation by the United Nations Security Council. The US meanwhile has not placed it on its Foreign Terrorist Organisation list while Russia has designated it a terrorist group since 2003.
