Argentina: Buenos Aires residents react to defeat of ruling coalition in primary elections

Buenos Aires residents commented on Monday on the results of the primary elections in Argentina, in which the ruling party was defeated.

President Alberto Fernandez recognised the results after the ruling coalition lost in most of the districts, including the Province of Buenos Aires.

“It seems to me that they are doing some things wrong. I voted for them but hey, I think they have to improve and adjust some things economically, the jobs… but hey, I think they can improve from here to the presidential elections,” said Andres Cresmani, a voter.

Alexandra Murcia, another local resident, stated that “[Alberto Fernandez] has not deepened much about his policies, he has been jumping from one side to the other depending on what was happening in the country with the pandemic and everything, I understood that, but his political choices were not the best, I think.”

With the vote count nearly over, the opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio overtook Fernandez’s Frente de Todos in the main regions of the country.

With a 67 percent turnout, Primary, Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory (PASO) elections have been the least popular since they were established in 2011.

SOT, Andres Cresmani, local resident (Spanish): “The effect [of Javier] Milei surprised me because on one hand it seems to me that a lot of youth agree with him, a lot of people who used to vote more towards the left, with this anti-political thing, like if it is taking hold on the rebellion of the kids, did you see? And it worries me, it worries me a lot.”

SOT, Rodrigo Rivero, local resident (Spanish): “I voted for [Javier] Milei since he gives a fairly forceful project in the sense that he does want to manage, not as a politician, but to change reality from within, as an economist, and it is fine what he is raising. He gives laws that will be open to the freedom and autonomy of each person, each human being.”

SOT, Digna Rodriguez, local resident (Spanish): “The political class is not helping us, they have to think more about the people. The middle class doesn’t even exist anymore, you understand? We are tired of them.”

SOT, Eliana Garcia, local resident (Spanish): “No, I did not go to vote yesterday, because I did not feel like it, I did not feel that the voting situation was pleasant, I have to choose between yes or no, and my choice is limited, I will end up choosing options that do not interest me.”
