Belarusian President Aleksander Lukashenko instructed the country’s security forces to tighten border controls during a meeting with army officials in Minsk, on Thursday.
He called the situation at the Lithuanian and Polish borders “alarming.”
“For us, this is already close to conflict, because we cannot allow the violation of state borders. The fact that they passed the law there to shoot migrants, beat, crush, poison - they are complete scoundrels,” he said, commenting on Lithuania’s recent decision to reserve the right to use force to stop irregular immigration.
“From now on, not a single person shall enter the territory of Belarus from adjacent states, whether from the south or from the west,” said Lukashenko. “Every meter of the border must be secured.”
The number of migrants on the Lithuanian territory has increased significantly after the introduction of European sanctions against Belarus with the country’s President Alexander Lukashenko in turn, announcing on May 26 that he would weaken control over migration at western borders.

And under the threat of using weapons to squeeze [them] out into the territory of Belarus. Well, you understand. According to our laws, as an old border guard, I know that our laws are the same as they were in the Soviet Union - to protect the border. For us, this is already close to conflict, because we cannot allow the violation of state borders. The fact that they passed the law there to shoot migrants, beat, crush, poison - they are complete scoundrels. But this is their right. They’ve shown their face. First of all, we should be concerned about every last meter of our border. And here the greatest responsibility you have, first of all, Anatoly Petrovich, from now on, not a single person shall enter the territory of Belarus from the adjacent states, whether from the south or from the west. How you will do this - after this meeting, we will discuss, meet with the Secretary of State. Here is the Minister of the Interior Affairs, here is the Minister of Defense. Every meter of the border must be secured.”
