Belarus: Minsk court declares websites Tut.by and Zerkalo.io to be extremist

The Minsk central district court declared news outlet Tut.by, as well as its new media venture Zerkalo.io, as extremist, on Friday. The instant messenger accounts of the project were also blacklisted.

According to Belarus Ministry of Internal Affairs press secretary Olga Chemodanova, the websites are recognised as a “platform for the propaganda of extremist activities aimed at inciting social hostility or discord, organising and carrying out mass riots, as well as inciting political and ideological enmity.”

She also added that there is administrative responsibility for publishing or reposting information from prohibited resources.

Zerkalo.io’s editors announced their intention to appeal the court’s decision.

On June 3, the Belarus Ministry of Internal Affairs filed a lawsuit demanding that the materials of Tut.by and its social networks (accounts on Telegram, Facebook, Instagram, Viber, Twitter, VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and TikTok) be recognised as extremist. The ministry’s statement says that the analysis of the portal’s content “revealed signs of extremism.”
