Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan was a fiasco. Lukashenko made the comments during a working visit to Bobruisk on Wednesday.
“This is a fiasco that has turned into a disgraceful runaway. You can’t make a global assessment of the situation now at all. This is what we see: you see it, I see it, I have some more information. It is a fiasco and it could not be otherwise,” stated Lukashenko.
The Belarusian president also pointed out that the US had seemingly abandoned its military equipment in Afghanistan.
“Why did they leave the weapons behind? Why did they leave ammunition and warehouses and so on?” he said.
Lukashenko also pointed out that Belarus has always cooperated with the Afghan government and has not prohibited the Taliban, so Belarus had “a wise policy towards Afghanistan”.

SOT, Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarusian President (Russian): “This is a fiasco that has turned into a disgraceful runaway. You can’t make a global assessment of the situation now at all. This is what we see: you see it, I see it, I have some more information. It is a fiasco and it could not be otherwise. There was not and will never be a power that would have defeated Afghanistan and brought it to its knees. It has never happened in history, I am telling you as a historian.”
SOT, Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarusian President (Russian): “Look, over two trillion they’ve spent on this war. 85 billion dollars the Americans have invested in building weapons, moving weapons and left it all there.”
SOT, Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarusian President (Russian): “The first time I spoke out about this, I told my presidents about it, my colleagues. Guys, let’s not get distracted by this. Let’s think about the fact that the Americans are not stupid people and they can play the long game. Why did they leave the weapons behind? Why did they leave ammunition and warehouses and so on?”
SOT, Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarusian President (Russian): “We have had enough of this disaster. You see how many Afghans have now gone through the territory of Belarus to Poland and Lithuania. The Poles have already suggested declaring a state of emergency in the border areas - God help them, let them declare it.”
SOT, Aleksander Lukashenko, Belarusian President (Russian): “As for Belarus, you know we had a wise policy towards Afghanistan. We did not prohibit the Taliban, we stayed out of it, we tried to cooperate with the former government. Neither the Taliban, nor the leadership of the former Afghanistan have anything to blame or show for us. We were pursuing a balanced policy.”
