Brussels locals reacted on Tuesday to the government’s decision to allow a four-day working week to improve work-life balance as part of a labour reform package prompted by the COVID pandemic.
As employees will be allowed to cover the 38-hour workweek in four days instead of five, some were sceptical, such as Cecilia. “I don’t know if it’s going to solve the problem of people,” she said. “I prefer the status quo and finish my working day at 5.30,” the local woman added.
Another local, Lily, said: “I think it’s great to give workers more flexibility, to see what works for them and what makes them more productive.”
Companies can still turn down workers’ requests for a 4-day working week, but they need to justify the denial.
The new labour laws will also give employees the right to ignore work-related messages after their shift.
SOT, Ayube, Brussels resident (French): “Well I find it a good idea to work four days a week, now we normally work remotely and so on and it’s fine. But it depends on your situation it’s not everyone can work four days and so on, you have to adapt to the situation because there are people who are single, for example, or who are with families with children, so it depends. That the situation is favorable for people who already have a family or children to give them more time, for education for example, so it’s good.”
SOT, Cecilia, Brussels resident: “I don’t know if it’s going to solve the problem of people, you know, having not so much time for their daily life, I don’t know hobbies, or taking care of the kids, because I don’t imagine myself working ten hours per day and then have one day off. I’d rather prefer status quo and ending my working day at 5.30, and then be free.”
SOT, Lily, Brussels resident: “I think it’s great to give workers more flexibility, in order to see what’s working for them and what make them more productive, and if it help them to work more in less amount [of time], or just faster, and this equals to having three days off, then why not.”
SOT, Tomas, Brussels resident: “It’s very strange to me, because I am self employed, and so I’m working basically every day of the week, so for me it doesn’t make really a lot of sense, but I guess If it targets certain person that are working and are not self employed, I guess I’m fine with that. I mean it’s really strange to me to think that some people would prefer working four days rather than five days, but if they are happy with that, I’m fine.”
