European Commission spokesperson Adalbert Jahnz announced that the European Court of Justice would receive a request to impose daily fines on Poland over what the EC believes is non-compliance to rulings related to the running of the country’s justice system, speaking from a Brussels press conference on Tuesday.

“The Commission decided to request the Court of Justice to impose financial penalties on Poland to ensure compliance with the Court’s interim measures order of 14 July 2021,” said Jahnz.

The Commission believes that Poland has not complied with the interim measures adopted by the court on 14 July [279 TFEU] concerning a disciplinary chamber of the Polish Supreme Court.
“They relate to actions by the Polish authorities, which continue to undermine the functioning of the Polish justice system,” said Jahnz.

Brussels and domestic opposition see the disciplinary chamber as a threat to Poland’s judicial independence.

The Polish government has in the past few weeks rejected the charges.
