Belgium: EU pledges to help prevent possible Bosnia breakup - Borrell

EU foreign ministers are ready to use ‘all the instruments available’ to help prevent a possible breakup of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the bloc’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced in Brussels on Monday.

“There is no place in Europe for a divided Herzogonivia,” said Borrell, adding that those who were trying to achieve such an end were ‘strongly wrong’ and ‘depriving their people of a prosperous European perspective on life.’

Borrell made the comments following a lengthy meeting of EU foreign ministers centered on the Ukraine crisis. However, the ministers also discussed EU troops in Mali and the growing tensions in the ethnically divided Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The US last month sanctioned Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik, who has been calling for the Serb-run part of Bosnia to be united with neighbouring Serbia.

Washington has accused him of ‘corrupt activities’ that could destabilise the country and unravel the US-headed Dayton Peace Accord. Dodik says he and Bosnian Serbs are being unfairly targeted.

Borrell said the EU ministers would urge political leaders in the Balkans ‘to take responsibility to preserve the country’s constitution and use ‘all the instruments available if the situation required,’ including financial assistance and restrictive measures, as a last resort.
