When asked about the build-up of Russian troops on Ukraine’s border, the EU’s top diplomat said, “I don’t think there is anything that can increase the feeling of fear about an immediate attack.” As for reports that Moscow could be sending security personnel to Belarus near the border with EU and NATO member Lithuania, Borrell said this was unlikely to increase concerns.
The Pentagon announced on Monday that an estimated 8,500 American soldiers have been put on heightened alert in the US in case NATO launches its Response Force or if the Ukraine crisis intensifies. More widely, NATO members have put their forces on standby and sent ships and fighter jets to Eastern Europe as tensions continue to mount at the Ukrainian border.
