European Commission spokesperson Nabila Massrali said the EU was ‘very concerned’ about reports indicating Sudan’s prime minister had been arrested by the country’s military, in comments made during a presser in Brussels on Monday.

“The EU is very concerned about Sudan’s military forces reportedly putting Prime Minister Hamdok under house arrest, and as well as detaining other members of the civilian leadership and we urge for their fast release,” she said.

Civilian Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok and four other ministers were among those reportedly detained by soldiers in Khartoum on Monday amid reports of a military coup.

Meanwhile the European Union is also following ‘very closely’ the developments following Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s decision to expel 10 foreign ambassadors for calling for the release of a jailed philanthropist, a spokesperson for the bloc said on Monday.

“We are following very closely the developments regarding the recent announcement by President Erdogan in relation to the statement made by ambassadors of ten countries in the follow up to their call on Turkey to implement the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in the case of Osman Kavala,” said spokesperson Peter Stano highlighting the ‘serious’ nature of the situation.

This past Saturday, Erdogan ordered the expulsion of several Western ambassadors, including a number from the European Union for advocating in favour of Kavala’s release. Kavala has been imprisoned for four years in Istanbul without having been convicted.
