Ruptly is live from Khartoum on Monday, October 25, following reports of the detention of the Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok by the country’s military.

The arrest was made after Hamdok refused to support a military coup attempt, according to Sudan’s Information Ministry which reported the detention. Other members of the country’s transitional civilian leadership have also been arrested according to reports.

One month ago, on September 24, alleged plotters had tried to take over a state media building, but the government took measures to contain the situation.

In April 2019, President Omar al-Bashir, the country’s long-term ruler, was removed from office and placed under house arrest by the Sudanese military, after almost four months of street demonstrations calling for his resignation. An interim government comprising military and civilian elements then took power.
