Thousands of people took to the streets of Khartoum on Thursday to protest against the prospect of military rule amid an ongoing sit-in by military-aligned groups in front of the Presidential Palace.
On the one side, supporters of the army are calling for a military-led government to pull the country out of its political and economic slump. On the other, activists of the 2019 uprising are calling for a complete transfer of power to civilians.
A combination of military and civilian leaders have led the country since the overthrow of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
Thursday’s protest marked the anniversary of the October 1964 uprising that ended the dictatorship of Ibrahim Aboud and to call for the dissolution of the current Sudanese government.
